Programme Description

World Premiere Presented and Commissioned by: National Center for Performing Arts (Taiwan)

Co-Production & Performance: Dance Forum Taipei & Zuni Icosahedron

World Premiere in March in Taipei, Hong Kong Re-run in September

'An engaging piece...the ending is ingenious.' — Performing Arts Review (Taiwan)

'We feel overwhelmed with weight when the Diamond Sutra is mentioned. Yet Dream Illusion Bubble Shadow conveys the feelings of airiness, ease, swiftness, dreaminess, illusion, colour, odour and light, revealing weight in lightness; nothingness in somethingness...', Mathias Woo

'Dream Illusion Bubble Shadow' is derived from the last chapter of the 'Diamond Sutra' ('All conditioned phenomena are like dreams, illusions, bubbles, shadows' and uses the negating logic of No to create the aesthetics of Emptiness. Time is structure. One and Zero. The body transforms into images. Movements on stage pass through virtual time and the actual space. Live guitar performs the no-sound of guqin. Synthesized electronic music interacts with body movements. In the five parts of 'Dream Illusion Bubble Shadow', dancers of Dance Forum Taipei together with artists from Hong Kong and Tokyo, co-create an atypical contemporary multimedia dance work that transforms the ordinary norms of presentation - introduction, elucidation, transition and conclusion.

Dance Forum Taipei – Founded by Ping, Heng in 1989, Dance Forum Taipei is the pioneer of contemporary dance in Taiwan, an open forum for different choreographers, dancers, and multimedia artists, from Europe, Asia and U.S., to collaborate, exchange, experiment and create new works, which keep giving new facet to modern dance of the east. New York Times described them 'the well-trained group…a pleasure to watch.'
