Programme Description

An Dehai, a eunuch and Empress Dowager Cixi’s trusted aide. It was said that An was known far and wide for his overarching power, corruption and meddling in political affairs. Once he stole out of the Forbidden City, claiming he was en route to 'order a new imperial robe,' but was arrested by the Shandong Governor General Ding Baozhen and sentenced to death. When news reached the Forbidden City that after a swift trial, Ding Baozhen executed An, Cixi lost her temper, and from there a drama is born.

Depicting a late Qing dynasty historical mystery, 'The Emperor, his Mom, a Eunuch and a Man' premiered in early 2013 to enthusiastic acclaims, winning 6 awards from Hong Kong Drama Award including Best Performance of the Year, Best Director and Best Costume Design. A refreshing new interpretation by playwright Paul Poon and director Roy Szeto of a well-known historical legend, its ingenious plot development, quirky set design, fantastically nuanced and effective performances make it a true theatrical tour de force. It gives an 'atypical' depiction of the Qing imperial court, in a fascinating exploration into human nature from past to present, whilst the desire-ridden dramatic tension promises to keep you on your toes. Returning by popular demand, the 2014 production is poised to serve up another historical storm of power struggles and intrigues.
