Programme Description

The atrocity of reality

Turns rumours into truth

A case revisited ten years on

The murderers tell it like it is!

When the news story of the gay teen Matthew Shepard being tortured to death was reported nationwide, the quiet town in Wyoming State became the focus of the country and was synonymous with ‘homophobia’ overnight. Ten years later, Tectonic Theater Project revisited the scene of the torture-murder case – the town of Laramie, to find out whether the views and attitudes of the local residents had changed. The result, albeit not exactly gruesome, was equally soul-searching. The Theater also conducted face-to-face interviews with the two murderers for the first time. When the interviews were collated, they formed another documentary theatre classic: The Laramie Project: 10 Years Later.

Is ten years enough to bring about changes? Faced with a deep trauma, how does the community heal the wound and re-write its history? Different versions of the story arose, and the truth is yet to be told.
