Set in Japan in 1980s, single mother and her four daughters live under the same roof and rely on each other for support. The eldest daughter, drops out of school to make a living. The second eldest, has long been responsible for housework as well as cooking for the whole family. To build and maintain a 'perfect' family, the mother and two daughters give it their all, until one day, the word 'marriage' stirs up a huge storm within the quiet family. Must women find their ultimate destination in marriage? Does being single mean happiness will always pass them by? Multiple-award winning playwright Hashida Sugako depicts female emotions with exceptional sensitivity, often paying tribute to their resilience towards life’s hardships.
Best known for Oshin, Wataru Seken wa oni Bakari and Akai Giwaku, Hashida’s dramatic masterpieces have moved audiences around the world.
