Programme Description

The planet is getting hotter. In the face of the many warning signs from nature that global warming is intensifying, fixing our world requires the effort of each and every one of us. On Saturday and Sunday mornings in January and February 2020, Oi! will introduce to Hong Kong audiences the many possibilities of green living by presenting four documentaries from different countries that explore how we can reduce our carbon footprint.

No Impact Man: The Documentary

Director: Laura Gabbert, Justin Schein
English with Chinese subtitles, approx. 92 min

Seeking inspiration for his next book, a New York author decides to live for a year without making any impact on the environment. In the face of fierce opposition from his meat-and-sweets-loving wife and threats to his personal relationships, does his plan to live green for 365 days have any chance of success?

Tomorrow

Director: Cyril Dion, Mélanie Laurent
English, French and Hindi (part) with Chinese subtitles, approx. 120 min

During her pregnancy, French actress Mélanie Laurent realises that her child may face the crisis of the scarcity of resources. Together with a crew of filmmakers that share the same aspiration to save the planet, Mélanie travels the world to investigate concrete solutions to environmental and social challenges, such as sustainable agriculture and power supply, the use of local currencies and civic engagement.

Waste Land
Director: Lucy Walker, Karen Harley
Portuguese and English with Chinese and English subtitles, approx. 99 min

‘One man’s trash is another man’s treasure’: this idiom neatly sums up the journey taken by Brazilian-American artist Vik Muniz as he travels to the world’s largest landfill in Rio and works with the garbage pickers there to create portraits of them using the waste materials they collect. Vik donates all the income generated from auctions of this works to his muses, who even manage to build a library that includes Sun Tzu’s The Art of War, despite having to work ceaselessly within the piles of trash in search of anything useful.

Just Eat It: A Food Waste Story
Director: Grant Baldwin
English with Chinese subtitles, approx. 75 min

Even though we know that food is extremely precious, food waste has become an ever more worrying problem today. After discovering that 40% of the food produced worldwide is wasted, a Vancouver couple challenge themselves to eat only food waste for six months, collecting imperfect produce and rejects from supermarkets and even searching through rubbish bins for edible food that has been thrown away. Their choice is not only a challenge to their bodies, but also a test of their dignity. Is the plan as bad as it sounds? Or can we change our mindset?
